My current interest in stones is mainly about stones that can be placed in gardens for viewing(KEISEKI：景石).

However、I found  out a lot of things in relation to this、such as that there are  people who enjoy stones   indoors as a decoration.(SUISEKI(=Water-stone)：水石)and that Japanese domestic stones was used for house foundations and graves and the industry was booming a little while ago(昭和時代：Showa era).

In addition,recently, local cities with special topography have been developed as geoparks,natural science museums have been set up to introduce them, and mineral fairs and shows organized by private companies are held throughout Japan.
I also have known that there were very few middle-age men who were  collectors of specimens,and there were  only young female who handmade ornament  using plain stones for  jewelry.

Recently,in addition to the TOUKEN sword girl and KOKESHI girl,there seems to be a new word in Japan：Mineral girl.
(TOUKEN girl is ,a woman who often goes to meuseums to see the swords in order to remind herself of  the character (male characters in an amime named after a famous Japanese swords) she is attracted to.
KOKESHI girl is fascinated by the simple cylindrical wooden dolls of theTOHOKU(東北) region of Japan ,so she collects them and takes part in landscape photos from her travel and post them on Instagram.)

When I couldn’t go abroad due to the new coronavirus outbreak,I went sight seeing in the Japanese countryside,which I had never been interested in. What attracted me was the traditional Japanese houses and gardens as well as the famous sightseeing spots, the local specialties of food and drink ,and hot springs.

And if Japanese people have the money,they will buy their own  house with a garden in the suburbs,a little far  from the city center,in order to be completely free from the stress of daytime work and relax their mind and body at home.

In contrast,Chinese and Korean people used to live in traditional house with courtyards ,but now  the only new residential areas are new towns with large-scale development and high-rise condominiums ,and they do not want to live in suburbs and have a garden.
It seems that they  place overwhelming inportance on the fact that  the area has convenient transportation,schools,hospitals,government offices and commerecial facilities.

Before hobbies became more diverse ,Japanese people who lived in detached houses would spend a large amount of money creating traditional Japanese gardens using trees and stones in order to enjoy the picturesque view of their gardens from the living room.
However,Japanese traditional gardens.which were created at a great expense in order to pass them down to their decendants,are often refused by but the chirdren.
the chirdren inherit the house and land upon their parents death,but demolish the house and sell the land instead.

Traditional Japanese gardens artificially extract and emphasize the beautiful parts of the natural landscape and recreate them in a well balanced way .

Therefore,most of the stones used are of a natural color and are of a single or similar colours .
Unique stones with distinctive shapes and  colours are placed as accents in important positions.

Unique stones like these that serve as accents are produced all over Japan, used to be traded at high prices.but now landscaping companies rarely receive orders, especially large item are in stock with no prospect of reselling at all.
It is more interesting than going on a pottery tour to systematically understand the unique stones of each region,then go to  the region and check and buy them with the landscaping company that owns them ,.
Along with a view of the old gardens in that area,I find it so interesting that I can’t stop,so I’m not a `Mineral girl’,but  a‘Crazy old man of garden stones’.

Other aspects related to stones include the state of stone industry,knowledge of the natural science of minerals,myth about strange rocks in various areas around Japan, and gemstones used together with precious metals as materials for elegant ornaments worn by women. I hope this site is useful for virtual events related to various  stones.
